Stay Cool with Ice Cream in July

Homemade Ice Cream - Easy, Fun, and Delicious
Have you ever read the ingredients list on store bought ice cream? I'm no food chemist, but there is something unnatural sounding about cellulose and propylene glycol monoesters.  An ice cream review in Cooks Illustrated highlighted that one national brand had shown no signs of melting after 30 minutes at room temperature.  It seems that there were so many fluffing and binding agents and so little milk or cream that the stuff wouldn't melt.  That is just weird.
Good thing you have options.  Making your own can be as easy or difficult as you choose to make it.  New electric ice cream makers require no ice, rock salt, or cranking.  Just plug it in and start adding ingredients.  If you must relive the days of taking turns cranking the old ice cream churn, believe it or not, they still make those models too.
Great Fun For Kids
Parents are always looking for a good activity to do with the kids.   Ice cream making is quite an educational endeavor for the little ones.   They love watching simple ingredients turn into frosty desserts right before their eyes.  As the kids get older watch out for wild flavor combinations.  Chances are, if your kid loves the Discovery Channel you may want to keep a close eye on what is going in the mix.  Big kids will like it too.  School colors ice cream will be a favorite dorm room tradition.
More Than Just Ice Cream
Most modern ice cream makers can multitask quite well.  If you are looking for lower fat or calorie options try recipes for frozen yogurt or sorbet.
Win Friends and Influence People
Next time you prepare dessert for friends try a local summer recipe that is sure to impress.
(Local) Peach Ice Cream Pie
1 pint fresh diced peaches (Conway Farmers Market)
1 cup fresh peaches blended, or crushed
1 cup sugar
1 cup whole milk
2 cups heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
Your Favorite Pie Crust(pre-bake if required)

In a medium bowl or zip-lock bag combine diced peaches, crushed peaches, and 1/2 cup sugar.  Stir and allow to marry for 2 hours.
Using a whisk or hand mixer combine milk and 1/2 cup sugar until sugar is fully dissolved (2 minutes).  Add cream to milk/sugar mix.  Turn the machine on and add ingredients (not peaches) to freezer bowl.  Mix until thickened, usually 25 minutes.  Add peaches and continue to mix for five more minutes.
Quickly scoop ice cream into your prepared pie crust.  Spread with spatula until smooth.  For presentation have ice cream mound slightly higher towards the center.
